Tenerife Takes Action to Protect the Environment

Tenerife is just one of the seven Canary Islands off the coast of Africa, yet it is making a huge impact on the environment. Tenerife has a commitment to the private and public sector to go green and do whatever they can to protect the environment of the island.

Tenerife and Tourism

The island of Tenerife is completely dependent on tourism. Tenerife has been a favorite destination for UK visitors for some time. Known as a Paradise Island, Tenerife is sunny year-round, which makes it the perfect destination for relaxing in the sun anytime of the year. Their goal is to keep it that way.

Going green and protecting the environment is one way that Tenerife can protect its status as a hot holiday spot. The island is vulnerable because it is so dependent on tourism. Changing climates could easily put them out of business and entirely change the nature of the island. Rising temperature alone could make relaxing on the beach an unbearable past-time.

Traveling to and around Tenerife

A ferry boat is available to take holidaymakers to the island of Tenerife from the mainland. The ferry goes to either Santa Cruz de Tenerife or Los Cristanos. Nearly half a million visitors come to the island of Tenerife via cruise ships. Of course, flights to Tenerife are also still available.

The main method of transportation on the island of Tenerife is buses. An elaborate fleet of newer buses provide transportation for one location to another on the island. There are some cars on the island that are available. There are also plans for a light rail network to connect the capital with the south side of the island. The idea is to reduce the amount of carbon emissions in the air caused by ground travel.

Tenerife Goes Green

Tenerife is doing a lot to protect its beautiful and natural environment. They've made a commitment to individuals and companies to go beyond the basics and protect the environment of the island with aggressive tactics.

Some of the things they are currently doing:

* The island uses water purification and its natural reserves from underground.
* They use recycling as a means to cut back on using natural resources.
* They use desalination.
* They are cutting back on carbon emissions.
* They use an elaborate bus network to minimize traffic on the island.
* It is home to tropical pilot whales, which is a huge attraction for holiday-makers. They protect their habitat.
* Half of the island is listed as either a national park or nature reserves.
* The island has been using renewable energy since the plan was devised back in 1990.

In addition to protecting the island's natural surroundings, Tenerife is dedicated to preserving its heritage and culture.

Tenerife as a Role Model for Protecting the Environment

While we all have seen some of the effects of global warming, Tenerife has taken action to protect the environment and retain the beauty and reputation of the island. The steps they've taken to reduce emissions and balance carbon in the air is admirable. Their actions serve as a role model for how the world needs to react to her changing environment.

The global warming climate change is a big issue, since we all start to witness more and more extreme weather and frequent natural disasters, and many of the old generation will tell you that they never experienced a warmer summer, a colder winter and a rainier season we all start to comprehend that what started 20 years or more as a small group of scientists started making noise about the greenhouse effects and global warming was not something scientific at all, it is very much a part of our every day life and may turn into a very important consideration in the near future.

As glaciers in Antarctica start melting in a seriously dangerous rate and the temperatures in the ocean rise as a result of the glaciers temperature more and more people understand that the next few years will not be the same in terms of temperature and the extreme weather all of the globe experience, extreme temperatures are experienced everywhere around the blue planet and there are many side effects to this phenomena.
Just speak with a ski instructor in Europe and you will understand that some people in this industry are very concerned for its future, as snow peaks quickly lose most of its mass, even in the European alps the rate of snow loss is overwhelming, glaciers fall apart and the increase of summer vacationers coming to see parts of mountains fall apart as a result of the decrease of glaciers to hold them together is raising serious concern for the future of skiing, with less snow and higher temperatures it will not be a popular and relatively cheap sport anymore.

But snow and ski is the least of concerns for every human on earth, floods and heat waves are. Floods like we have seen hit the U.S and parts of a Asia and Europe. The change in the average temperature around the world, all above their usual averages and well above the slow global warming recorded in the last few decades. Heat waves that kill many hundreds in eastern Europe and western Europe, places that have not felt such high temperatures ever and certainly not for so long as 10 or 15 days. Sudden snow storms early in the year have a significant effect on many industries and their transportation systems.

It is assumed that all humans on the planet will feel a direct discomfort or even worst in the next few years, all connected to global warming. If we are really concerned we should do our best to raise the awareness to global warming and the dangers involved. The development of India and China makes the risk even more significant as more and more people of these two great nations purchase cars and use more electricity then ever before.
While it is hard to explain to them why they cant use the same thing the Americans and Europeans enjoyed for so long, it is fairly simple to explain that if we continue to live like that the days of humans (as the lives of many creatures that share earth with us) are numbered.

It is a clear and very true threat on human life on earth and global warming has only reveled a part of its power, it is estimated that once we hit a certain degree things will escalate very quickly and everyone will feel this very fast, we might see a complete change of the weather system in the next few years if we do not act now.

Top TV Series Tackles Global Warming: Biofriendly Already There

Television hero Jack Bauer is set to take on global warming in addition to his usual duties of single-handedly defending the free world against terrorists, assassins, and diabolically clever double agents. This story will be told in the coming season of Fox hit series 24(1). The 2008 season of the series will be incorporating environmentally-friendly messages into episodes as well as creating a "carbon-neutral" season finale. In a somewhat less dramatic fashion, Biofriendly Corporation has been tackling this problem for over 16 years.

"It is good to see a mainstream television series attacking this vital issue which affects us all," says Jim D'Arezzo, Senior VP of Sales and Marketing of Biofriendly Corporation. "It is because of the severity of problems like global warming that we at Biofriendly have spent the last 16 years and over $25 million developing an effective solution: Green Plus® liquid fuel catalyst."

Green Plus helps solve a 100-year-old problem in the conversion of fuel to energy. The problem is that hydrocarbon molecules within fuel tend to cluster, so oxygen cannot fully react with them. Biofriendly's Green Plus liquid fuel catalyst slightly "unbundles" these hydrocarbon clusters, allowing more oxygen to interact with them resulting in a faster, more linear and more complete burn. The result is more engine power, more torque, better fuel economy and, most importantly, fewer environmentally-harmful emissions such as carbon dioxide, the main contributor to global warming.

In addition to over 4 billion proven miles of customer use, Biofriendly's Green Plus has undergone exhaustive testing by such independent laboratory organizations as California Environmental Engineering (CEE), Southwest Research Institute, and Olson EcoLogic.

Fox's efforts have not stopped at the series. Kiefer Sutherland, who portrays Jack Bauer, has also recorded a public service announcement on the effects of global climate change, and similar spots including other cast members of the series are in the works. Fox themselves have joined a growing list of major corporations in "going green," and are taking steps such as purchasing all of its energy from renewable power sources, integrating hybrid cars into its production fleet, and posting resources on the Web for viewers to learn how to reduce their own carbon use.

Biofriendly is proud to lend their name to the growing trend to save our planet.

Hybrid Cars Tax Rebate: The Benefits You Get When You Own a Hybrid Car

Hybrid cars are one of the latest innovations in the car industry today. Because of the rising cost of fuel, car manufacturers have integrated the hybrid technology in their cars. The concept of the hybrid engine technology is actually very simple to explain. Although hybrid cars still use fuel, it can efficiently save it. This is because the hybrid technology combines the electric motor technology with the gasoline engine.

With the hybrid technology, it allows consumers to save as much as 30 miles a gallon on fuel. The main advantage of hybrid cars is when the car stops or when it is running on idle mode, it automatically shuts off the gasoline engine. However, the car will continue running but it will run on the electric motor. Therefore, it saves a lot on fuel. Just imagine being stuck on traffic, with the hybrid technology, you will never waste precious and expensive fuel when the car is running idle. This is also the reason why hybrid cars are so quiet when it is stationary. When you step on the accelerator, the gasoline engine automatically turns on again.

Another reason why hybrid cars are now preferred by most people is that it emits lower levels of toxic emissions. This means that hybrid cars are environmentally friendly. Just imagine, if all people would start using hybrid cars, it will lessen the emission of carbon dioxide. For this reason, it will effectively stop global warming.

Because hybrid cars can both help in saving precious fuel and reduce the emission of toxic fumes, the government is now taking all the necessary steps to promote the hybrid technology. The consumer who owns a hybrid car can enjoy more benefits than you may imagine. Not only will they save a lot of money on fuel, and help produce a cleaner environment, but they can also enjoy tax rebates.

Back in 2005, the President of the United States signed an agreement back in the year 2005 that says that hybrid car buyers will be able to enjoy large amounts of tax relief. However, the amount of money you will save on the tax incentives will also vary on the hybrid car you purchase.

The first one you have to consider when getting a tax break is that it will depend on the fuel efficiency of the hybrid car you purchased when you compare it to a conventional car in the same weight class manufactured back in the year 2002. The more it saves fuel, the bigger the tax break will be.

The tax break imposed on a hybrid car will also vary on the amount of gasoline that the hybrid car can save in its total years of operation when it is compared to a conventional car in the same weight class. The more gasoline it saves, the bigger your tax relief will be.

It is a fact that hybrid cars can be expensive. However, just think about the long term benefits that the hybrid car can give you. If you calculate overall total expenses of a hybrid car and compare it to the total expenses of a conventional car during its lifetime, you will see that you can save more money on fuel. You will also save money on taxes. You will see that purchasing a hybrid car is definitely a good investment that all people should consider.

Not only will you be able contribute in producing a cleaner environment and save a lot of money on precious, expensive and limited supply of fuel, but you will also save a lot of money on tax rebates for hybrid car buyers.

Renewable Energy Reduces Electricity Use For Corporates

South Africa's growing economy has put huge strain on electricity usage. South Africa's electricity demand has been increasing at 15% a year, placing considerable strain on existing infrastructure. "We would like to work together with Eskom's new task team to aid in load reduction. This will ensure that our economy does not suffer loss from unnecessary load-shedding," says Andile Dlamini Toyota spokesperson.

Renewable energy is a reliable alternative to the traditional kind. In 2006, over 18% of global final energy came from renewables. By the end of 2008, Toyota will have installed 270 solar panels into its Durban plant. The company's decision to install solar panels will enable them to operate at full capacity while also reducing demand on Eskom.

Where previously Toyota's Prospecton plant in Durban used electricity and gas to heat water, it will now use energy converted from the sun as a source of heat. Solar panels collect and convert energy from the sun into energy and heat that is then used by nearby buildings.

Toyota's renewable energy project began in 2006 with the installation of 44X2,5m2 panels and the second phase was completed in June 2007 when 150 panels were installed. In the third phase of this project, Toyota will install a further 120 panels. While the project has cost Toyota R3.5 million, the company expects to save R95 000 per month on energy costs when the project is completed in the next few months. "Not only is this a significant financial saving, but it shows that Toyota is supportive of Eskom's energy saving initiative," comments Dlamini.

The car manufacturer will also reduce carbon dioxide released to the atmosphere by approximately 1350 tons per annum. Environmental impact of electricity use in South Africa is a concern which big electricity users like Toyota need to help address. Dlamini confirms, "Our solar power initiative is done with the environment in mind."

Commenting to Business Report, Andrew Atzinger, spokesperson for Eskom highlighted, "Until we have a culture where we pull together for the benefit of the economy...and each other, we would not expect there to be significant savings." Toyota's solar panel initiative will encourage other large companies to tackle the power-shortage in innovative ways.

Hydrogen Filling Station Approved for Mazda

Mazda Motor Corporation has received authorization from the Japanese government to operate a hydrogen-gas filling station near its Hiroshima headquarters. The station stores and supplies fuel to Mazda vehicles powered by hydrogen rotary engines; the vehicles are currently under development. The station should be able to fill up to 10 vehicles a day.

The RX-8 Hydrogen Rotary vehicle, which runs on either hydrogen or gasoline will be marketed as a commercial model to public offices and enterprise users in Japan Mazda now continues its development of the world’s first dual-fuel rotary engine, the H2RE (Mazda RX-8 Hydrogen RE). The new facility will store and supply fuel for the hydrogen-rotary powered vehicles and Mazda looks likely to have street-legal versions in use within the next two years.

The novel concept appeared as part of the Mazda display at the International Detroit Motor Show in January, and builds on the colossal worldwide success of the Mazda RX-8 four-door coupe. The H2RE is powered by a modified version of Mazda's award-winning RENESIS rotary engine and features an electronically controlled hydrogen direct injection system on the rotor housing.

The hydrogen/rotary combination also offers superior environmental performance - zero CO2 emissions and near zero NOx emissions. The innovative engine can be built reliably at a relatively low cost because existing parts and production facilities are utilized. More importantly, the hydrogen/gasoline dual fuel system will enable the H2RE to travel beyond the range of the few hydrogen filling stations now available.

Mazda will continue to develop this technology for practical use and for a hydrogen-fuelled society of the future.

Working With The Power Of Wind

Wind power is growing in popularity as an alternative to fossil fuel and one of the best of the renewable energy sources. The use of wind power requires wind turbines. Wind turbine generators do little to harm the environment and are far preferable in this regard to fossil fuel. The only disadvantage is that they cannot be used everywhere. In order to effectively use turbines to generate wind power you would need an average wind speed of at least 13 miles per hour. Obviously, that is not found everywhere.

Palm Springs California is ideal for wind turbines that generate power and as you pass through there along highway 10 you will see these wind turbines in various sizes. Called a wind farm, This San Bernadino Mountain area has over 4000 windmills in its San Gorgonio Mountain Pass. These turbines provide enough wind power to provide electricity to all of Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley area as a whole. Most of the current wind power generation in the U.S. resides in California.wind power wind turbine

The largest of the wind power windmills is 150 feet in height with blades that stretch halfway across a football field. There are compartments at the windmills top that house its generators, its hub and its gearbox. These weigh at least 30,000 and as much as 45,000 pounds. At this size the turbine for wind power may cost more than 300,000 but will provide 300 kilowatts each hour. This amount of wind power is enough to keep one typical household in electrical power for an entire month.

The American Wind Energy Association AWEA is a U.S. – wide non-profit organization promoting wind power as a clean electrical source for consumers the world over. AWEA represents developers of wind power projects, those who are in the business of supplying wind power equipment, wind power service providers, manufacturers of wind power parts, utilities that provide wind power for electrical power, scientists researching green energy resources that include the use of wind power and others involved in any way in the wind power industry. Hundreds of advocates of wind power are also members of AWEA.

The American Wind Energy Association provides the latest information on the operation of current or potential wind power projects, the ongoing development of new wind power projects, companies who work in the burgeoning industry, the development of new wind energy technology, and government legislation and policies that pertain to the use, production and funding of wind power and other renewable energies.

AWEA acts as a clearing house for the wind power industry, and as such communicates the pertinent statistics, facts and news. From AWEA consumers and others can find out the latest legislative decisions and efforts, including the best information on grants and loans to aid in the implementation of residential, commercial and governmental wind power projects.

AWEA publishes and disseminates the only weekly wind power newsletter that exists anywhere. It also hosts an annual wind power conference, with presentations on the latest technological developments and trends as well as access to businesses offering help in its implementation.
